Tinospora cardifolia:
Pharmacology:
Protective effect:
It has been reported to increase leucocyte counts and ablate neutropenia following single and multiple doses of cyclophosphamide. Pre-treatment with Tinospora cordifolia has also been shown to afford protection against induced infections.
Immunomodulatory effect:
Tinospora cordifolia exerts its action by promoting leukocytosis with predominant effect on neutrophils. It enhances the phagocytic and intracellular killing capacity of macrophages and PMNs (Polymorphonuclear leukocytes), stimulates the release of cytokines such as GM-CSF (Granulocyte Macrophage- Colony Stimulating Factor), IL1, IL2 and causes the proliferation of B-lymphocytes.
The treatment with Tinospora cordifolia for 15 days induced leukocytosis with predominant neutrophilia with a statistically significant (p < 0.001) increase of 82%. Similarly, the absolute neutrophil count in the Tinospora cordifolia treated group was significantly (p < 0.001) more than in the control group.
Aloe vera:
Pharmacology:
Immunomodulatory effect: Extracts of Aloe vera have been claimed to have several important therapeutic properties including acceleration of wound healing, immune stimulation, anti-cancer, and anti-viral effects. However, the biological mechanisms of these activities are unclear.
Because of this wide diversity of effects, it is believed that they may be exerted through pluripotent effector cells such as macrophages. It was found to stimulate macrophage cytokine production, nitric oxide release, surface molecule expression, and cell morphologic changes. The production of the cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha were dependent on the dose of extracts of Aloe vera provided. Nitric oxide production, cell morphologic changes and surface antigen expression were increased in response to stimulation by a mixture of aloe vera extracts and IFN-gamma.
Exposure of macrophages to aloe vera extract upregulates the RB (Respiratory Burst), phagocytosis and candicidal activity.
When peritoneal macrophages were exposed to extract from Aloe vera, there was approximately a two-fold increase in RB (Respiratory Burst), a marked increase in phagocytosis (45%) and killing of Candida albicans (38%). When incubated with Aloe vera extract, 98% of yeas cell were killed.
Anti-leukemic effect: When the pharmacological effect of diethyl-hexyl-phthalate (DEHP) from Aloe vera Linne, was investigated on the apoptosis of human leukemic cell lines K562, HL60 and U937, the following results were obtained: At a level of 10 microg mL(-1) DEHP a significant anti-leukemic effect was observed for all three cell lines, as measured by clonogenic assay. After treatment with 10 microg mL(-1) DEHP for 4 h, agarose gel electrophoresis and flow cytometric analysis confirmed the occurrence of apoptosis. These results indicate that DEHP isolated from Aloe vera Linne has a potent antileukemic effect, and thus represents a new type of pharmacological activity with respect to human leukemic cells.
Curcumin Longa:
Immunomodulatory effect:
The immunomodulatory effect of Curcuma longa extract on various aspects of immune response is well established, including its effect on lymphoid cell population, Antigen presentation, humoral and cell mediated immunity and cytokine production.
Ocimum sanctum:
Immunomodulatory effect:
Studies with alcoholic extracts of Ocimum sanctum have shown that it improves and modulates immunity.
